Ten GOP senators file friend-of-the-court brief supporting DOMA:

Ten out of the country’s 45 Republican senators have filed a friend-of-the-court brief in support of the Defense of Marriage Act.

The Supreme Court will hear Windsor v. United States, the pressing case to determine DOMA’s constitutionality, in March. The Obama administration has refused to defend the law, so it’s being defended by the Republican-led Bipartisan Legal Advisory Group.

In case you’re wondering, the senators who signed are:

The 10 are Senate minority leader Mitch McConnell of Kentucky, Orrin Hatch of Utah, Lindsey Graham of South Carolina, Saxby Chambliss of Georgia, Dan Coats of Indiana, Mike Crapo of Idaho, Charles Grassley of Iowa, Richard Shelby of Alabama, and Thad Cochran and Roger Wicker, both of Mississippi, reports Equality on Trial.

Furthermore, here’s their argument:

Those who signed on to the brief claim their support of DOMA, which prevents the federal government from recognizing same-sex marriages, is not based on hostility to gays and lesbians. “There is no basis to equate support for the traditional definition of marriage with unconstitutional animus or ‘a bare congressional desire to harm a politically unpopular group,’” the brief says.

Later, it continues, “It is simply not irrational or bigoted to oppose the redefinition of marriage in a manner ‘unknown to history and tradition,’ to use the language of the court below. … To the contrary, when faced with a proposed fundamental redefinition of the institution of marriage, it would be irrational not to consider ‘American society’s historical view of a marriage as being between a man and a woman.’”

We get it, senators. You don’t like us and you’re running out of ways to say it.

Soho is so beautiful in the snow especially right after snow has freshly fallen and still sits like icing on the fire escapes and street signs.

This part of Soho is part of the Soho Cast Iron District which consists of 500 buildings that feature distinct cast-iron architecture spanning over a 26 block radius. Many of the buildings date back to the 1870s when the area was primarily residential. However, most of the residences during the later part of the 20th century were converted for commercial use which allowed Soho to play an integral role in the commercial development of New York City.

This is a view looking north up Mercer Street in Soho towards midtown. The Chrysler Building can be seen in the distance. The snow-covered sign on the left belongs to Fanelli’s Cafe which has stood in this spot since the 1850s.

This was taken during one of the last huge snowstorms we had in New York City back during the winter season of 2010-2011 with my Panasonic FZ-35 (loved that camera!). I have been pining away wishing for snow like this since we really haven’t gotten snow in a major way here in NYC since that winter season. Photos like this one will just have to suffice, I guess :)
